ABSTRACT:
In 1978 an objective measure of fear of failure entitled the Self-deprecation and Insecurity Scale (SDIS) was developed. This instrument has not been employed extensively in research, therefore the present study was conducted to establish reliability for the instrument. The subjects were 94 male and female college students enrolled in physical education. The Fear of Success Scale (FOSS), developed in 1976, and the SDIS were administered on consecutive days. The split-half method was used to estimate the internal consistency reliability of the SDIS. The zero order correlation between the two scales was .26 with a shared variance of 7 per cent, thus the two scales appear to measure unique constructs. It is therefore hypothesized that the SDIS is an acceptable instrument for assessing the relationship of fear of failure to physical performance despite the fact that it measures other qualities. More research is needed to test this hypothesis. Tests the reliability of a general measure of fear of failure entitled the Self-deprecation and Insecurity Scale. The scale was administered to 43 male and 51 female college students in Physical Education racquet-sport classes. Subjects also completed the Fear of Success Scale. Analysis indicates that the two scales appear to measure unique constructs. Results support the hypothesis that SDIS is an acceptable instrument for assessing the relationship of fear of failure to physical performance.
