ABSTRACT:
The study sought to update earlier work concerning the relationship between managerial succession and organizational effectiveness. The results indicate that there is an inverse relationship between the two variables among franchises which have remained stable since 1951. Conversely there is a direct relationship between the two variables for the franchises added to the league since 1951. Considered the relationship between managerial succession and organizational effectiveness. Examined this relationship for the most recent period of major league baseball, 1951-80. Data were collected on winning percentages, average ranking, and average number of managers employed by a team. When all teams were considered there was virtually no association between either measure of organizational effectiveness and managerial succession. Separate consideration of old franchises and new franchises indicated an inverse relationship for the former group.
