ABSTRACT:
The authors have taken a sample of Sports Illustrated feature articles drawn from the years 1960, 1967, 1974 and 1981 in order to examine the extent of coverage given to blacks and whites. There was a marked increase in the number of articles featuring blacks in 1981 compared to 1960, 1967 and 1974. The authors feel this increase is due to an increased coverage of baseball and football. The authors conclude that Sports Illustrated personnel have accepted that black athletes are of interest to the general population. Examines the extent of coverage of black athletes in Sports Illustrated magazines from 1960 to 1981. Suggests that coverage has substantially increased and is associated with increases in coverage of football and baseball. Concludes that the stereotyping of black athletes is consistent over this period.
