ABSTRACT:
The aim of this research was to identify certain characteristics of individuals high or low in sociometric prestige and status among members of college baseball and soccer teams. It was shown that leadership status was significantly related to coaches' ratings of actual performance, eligibility standing, and locus of control athletes who scored high in leadership states were found to be internals. Identified qualities or characteristics of individuals who are rated to be high or low in leadership or friendship status among members of two interacting collegiate athletic teams. Two experiments were conducted, one for each team. A sociometric peer nomination instrument assessing leadership choices on the field as well as friendship choices off the field were evaluated. Locus of control, eligibility standing and coaches rating of actual and potential performance were used as dependent measures of leadership. Results were similar for both teams: leadership status was significantly related to coaches ratings of actual performance, eligibility standing and locus of control. Friendship status was significantly related to only one dependent measure: ratings for actual baseball performance.
