ABSTRACT:
This paper discusses the results from 5 surveys which looked into the changes in the social acceptance of female athletes. The data revealed that there exists a differential social acceptance of female sport participation. The motion that one's degree of involvement in sport is a crucial factor in their acceptance of sport is also substantiated. Reports the findings of five surveys concerning female athletes that were conducted over the previous decade. Demonstrates a clear pattern of differential attitudes depending on type of sport. Reports a favorable public opinion of female participation in tennis, swimming and gymnastics but reservations concerning basketball, softball and track. Concludes that public attitudes have become more favorable toward female athletic participation.
