ABSTRACT:
This article reviews the work of economists involved in research into the factors governing performance and attendance at professional team sports. The review concludes that economic, demographic, game and team attractiveness exert strong influences on attendance. In terms of performance, more study is needed to determine the relative importance of different playing skills and managerial input. Reviews and assesses the efforts of economists to predict the impact of different factors on performance and attendance at a variety of sports. Indicates that a selection of analytic methods are available for use but concludes that there is considerable scope for further enquiry. Identifies a number of economic, demographic, game and team attractiveness, and general preference factors that are important to attendance.
