ABSTRACT:
To test the leadership role differentiation theory, the author studied 23 teams in an intramural basketball competition. Using a questionnaire approach, this study did not find support for the theory of leadership role differentiation or for the importance of the leaders' legitimation as a mediating variable in that role differentiation. Tests leadership theory with 23 teams (N=188) in three intramural basketball leagues. Uses questionnaire data designed to identify choices for instrumental and expressive leadership. Indicates that role integration rather than differentiation occurred with the most important leaders on the teams scoring higher on both types of leadership. Suggests that the nature of the task which requires both individual ability and team skills accounts for the findings.
