ABSTRACT:
This paper examines the labeling, strain, differential association and control theories of juvenile delinquency and discusses how these theories can integrate the possible deterrent role played by interscholastic sport in juvenile delinquency. The theoretical framework that is developed borrows heavily from the control and differential association theories. Examines how major theories of juvenile delinquency can integrate the role played by interscholastic sport and whether a deterrent effect exists. Suggests that support for the deterrent effect of sport participation upon juvenile delinquency has serious policy implications for school administrators and school board members in times of economic restraint.
