ABSTRACT:
Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlations on 93 youth sport subjects, this study demonstrated that there was a positive relationship between the influence of significant others in the decision for participation in youth sports and thoughts of quitting. It is evident that children ought to make their own decision regarding participation in sporting endeavours. Reports interview data (N=93) from adolescent males and females. Indicates that those who chose to participate in sport were less likely to quit and more likely to report high self ratings of skill and ability than those whose participation was influenced by others. Suggests that parents and coaches should exact caution when considering compelling, coercing or influencing children to participate in youth sport.
