ABSTRACT:
In order to assess possible differences in the self-image of male and female athletes a survey was administered to 1276 athletes of high school age. The results indicate ninth and tenth grade females have a more positive self-image than eleventh and twelth grade females, and males in all grades feel more positive about their sociological gains resulting from athletics. It was also found that eleventh and twelth grade males place more positive benefit on participation than ninth and tenth grade males. Uses sociological, psychological and physical scales to measure the extent to which athletic participation benefited male and female high school athletes (N=1276). Suggests that 9th and 10th grade female athletes and 11th and 12th grade males benefited on all 3 dimensions. Argues that males attributed benefits to athletic participation more than females.
