ABSTRACT:
A forty item questionnaire designed to compare religion and superstition was administered to 529 athletes between the ages of twelve and twenty-two. The results support the contention that evidence of superstitious behavior is positively correlated to church attendance. The authors acknowledge limitations in the experimental design of this study but feel that further investigations of the interrelationship betwen religion and superstition in the sport situation are warranted. Compares superstitious beliefs and practices with church attendance and religious affiliation of high school, for college and university basketball players in the United States. Uses questionnaire data (N=529) and reports that superstitious behaviours related positively to church attendance and that Mormon athletes were more likely to subscribe to superstitions than Catholics and Protestants.
