ABSTRACT:
The role of race in sports is the topic of this paper. The authors focus on changing patterns of racial participation in intercollegiate basketball between 1958 and 1980. The data show that 4.5% of the players were black in 1954 whereas nearly 50% were black in 1980. The Kanter model for group dynamics in team sports involving different races and cultures is used as a guide. Examines patterns of participation and integration in college basketball 1958-1980, focusing on trends during the 1970's. Secondary data were used. Results indicated that despite the fact that blacks comprised 10% of the population, almost 50% of the players were black in 1980, considerable integration of black players has occurred, there has been a steady and substantial decline in the proportion of black players found in starring and starting roles, and positional stacking has been eliminated.
