ABSTRACT:
The relationship between interscholastic athletic participation and delinquent behavior was investigated in 1,935 high school students. The results indicated that athletes exhibit significantly less delinquent behavior than non-athletes. Athletes in major sports demonstrated more delinquent behavior than athletes in minor sports. Seasons of participation seems to have little or no effect on delinquent behavior among athletes. Investigates the relationship between interscholastic athletic participation and delinquent behavior by determining differences in behavior between athletes and nonathletes and between different groups of athletes. Self report questionnaires were administered to a total sample of 1935 students from eight selected high schools. Results indicated that high school athletes exhibit considerably less delinquent behavior than nonathletes and this relationship generalizes across all subsamples and for all types of offenses. Athletes in major sports exhibited significantly more delinquent behavior than athletes in minor sports. Seasons of participation had little or no effect on delinquent behavior among athletes.
