ABSTRACT:
The educational aspirations of academically-disadvantaged high school athletes were evaluated in this study. The results indicate that academically-disadvantaged athletes hold higher educational goals than their non-athlete counterparts. Athletics was found to be more important for the educational goals of disadvantaged youth, as compared to advantaged youth. Evaluates the importance of interscholastic athletics for the formation of educational aspirations among academically disadvantaged high school youth. It is proposed that academically disadvantaged athletes hold higher educational goals than their nonathlete counterparts and that participation in athletics is more important for the educational goals of disadvantaged youth in contrast to advantaged youth. Results indicate that athletic participation is related to the formation of educational aspiration in a similar manner for both academically advantaged and disadvantaged youth.
