ABSTRACT:
This paper investigates six factors which have been recognized as having the capability of impairing sport group performance. These barriers include: (1) "group think", (2) sub-group formation, (3) negative effect, 94) psychological homogeneity, (5) value/norm/sanction incompatibility, and (6) distributed leadership. Applications to small groups are provided. Argues that a basic understanding of group dynamics theory, research and methodology is a necessary and essential first step toward understanding the vagaries of team sport life. Identifies 6 factors as having the capability of improving sport group performance: (1) group think, (2) sub-group formation, (3) negative affect, (4) psychological homogeneity, (5) value/norm/sanction incompatibility and (6) distributed leadership.
