ABSTRACT:
The authors address the comparison of the non athletic versus the athletic female as to body image, personality and constitution. 40 athletes and 40 nonathletes partook in this study by answering a questionnaire. It highlighted indices of femininity and body image along with the Gough Adjective Check list for personality. The authors define the athletic personality and differences between individual and team sports. The results indicated that female athletes have a more positive body image while no significant difference in femininity was found. Suggestions for further research and problems inherent in this study are discussed. Analyzes three broad issues related to the participation of women and girls in athletic activities, (l) the self perceptions of femininity and body image among female athletes and nonathletes, (2) the personality trait differences between female athletes and nonathletes and, (3) the personality differences between female individual and team sport participants. A sample of 40 athletes and 40 nonathletes is used and differences between female athletes and nonathletes were found on four of six personality variables: self confidence, achievement, dominance, and aggression.
