ABSTRACT:
A British Columbian provincial sport association was studied in order to understand the participation of volunteer workers, their goals and motives. It was concluded that elites, those highest up the hierarchy, were 'committed' and lower participants were not. An exploratory, descriptive study of a provincial sport association to analyze concept of voluntarism examining the involvement of volunteers. Etzioni's typology of compliance relations was used. Hierarchical position in the organization and geographical location were used as moderating variables. Sixty three members of the sport association were interveiwed using a structured question/unstructured answer technique. Found no relationship between the structure used and involvement of members, geography of the province did hinder interaction of members, and a relationship between commitment and power position existed. Concluded congruency according to Etzioni's typology was present at the upper hierarchial levels, and incongruency at the lowest level.
