ABSTRACT:
The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule was given to 52 bodybuilders who were classified as beginning, intermediate and competitive bodybuilders. Likewise the test was given to 49 non-athlete, non-bodybuilders. After various statistical analyses the competitive and intermediate bodybuilders differed from the beginners and non-athletes in achievement and change. There was no support for the negative stereotyping of bodybuilders. Study to isolate and distinguish bodybuilders from other athletic subgroups by determining personality characteristics of three levels of bodybuilders. 52 males between 18 and 49 were classified as beginner, intermediate or competitor. Subjects were given Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) to obtain measures of relative strength of 15 standard personality variables. Significant differences were found between the four groups through MANOVA. The need for achievement and need for change were individually significant. Concluded that bodybuilders appeared to be relatively normal in terms of their personality dispositions.
