ABSTRACT:
The authors examine the superstitions beliefs and behaviors of male and female competitive basketball players in junior and seniors high schools, one college and one university. Subjects were given a questionnaire. The results indicate that in the sport of basketball, superstitions are prevalent and that superstitious beliefs and behaviors vary by sex, age, and various measures of athletic involvement. Examines the superstitious beliefs and behaviours of male and female competitive basketball players in junior and senior highschool, college and university. Data were gathered from 310 athletes who completed questionnaires. The independent variables of socio-demographic and athletic measurements were compared with measures of beliefs and behavior. Found females to be more superstitious than males, age and measures of athletic participation demonstrated a positive relationship to superstitious beliefs and practices, and a strong relationship existed between church attendance and ritualistic beliefs and practices.
