ABSTRACT:
The relationship between children's motor and social skill level and their attitudes toward reward systems in youth sport was examined. Low motor and social skill children valued "extrinsic reward" items more than high skill children. Children rated high in social skill place greater value upon "intrinsic reward" items than children rated low. Analyzes the relationship between children's motor and social skill level and their attitudes toward reward systems in sport. Eleven and twelve year old students (n=238) received subjective evaluations on their motor performance and social skills by their physical education teachers. Each child completed a questionnaire determining their attitudes toward sport. Results found ten attitude items significant for both motor and social skill rating. Factor analysis extracted extrinsic reward as a function of both motor and social skill level, and intrinsic motivation as a function of social skill level only. Both low motor and social skill children valued extrinsic reward items more than high skill children. Children rated high in social skill placed greater value upon intrinsic reward items than children rated low in social skill.
