ABSTRACT:
The effects of interscholastic athletic participation on patterns of educational achievement socialization among adolescents were investigated. Hypotheses regarding educational ambition; interpersonal encouragement to attend college received from parents, teachers and peers; association with a college-bound crowd; high school academic performance; and competitive value-organizations were tested. Race and sex discrepencies were noted. Evaluates hypotheses regarding educational ambition, interpersonal encouragement to attend college, association with a college oriented crowd, high school academic performance and competitive value organizations. The sample was comprised of black and white high school senior athletes of both sexes. The findings confirm role-theory based conceptions of the consequences of interscholastic athletics for academically relevant behaviors and college plans for white males only.
