ABSTRACT:
Measures and tests Rooney's theory of sport's regions in order to gain a better insight into the direct and indirect consumption patterns of the typical sports fan. Personal interviews using questionnaires were used to collect data from (N=378) college undergraduates. Results indicated a direct relationship between consumption and distance to a team's home field and an inverse relationship between distance to a professional team's home field and loyalty to that team. Level of interest, gender, and participation in high school sports were all found to be good predictors of sport consumption and knowledge. No relationship was found between sport consumption and social class, race, religion, or political preference.
