ABSTRACT:
This paper presents a review of the structural differences between play, games, and organized sport and reports data collected on the subjective experiences of young participants in each of these activity contexts. Results indicate that patterns of experiences vary according to the context in which they occur and that each activity offers a unique and necessary, but incomplete, set of developmental experiences. Presents a brief review of the structural differences between play, games and sport and reports data collected on the subjective experiences of young participants in each of these activities. The motives for participation, the dynamics of the activities, the meanings assigned to experiences, and the implications of the subjective experiences were found to differ in each of the settings.
