ABSTRACT:
Examines the symbol of the derby within the framework of symbolic interaction theory and considers two historical sources of the meaning of this symbol. Proposes that one source of meaning is related to the origins of the event and the other source to the life careers of the participants. These two sources are considered for studying the social action that revolves around the Kentucky Derby. The event is examined historically.
