ABSTRACT:
The present study explores differences in leisure activities, attitudes toward work, and satisfaction with aspects of life between former collegiate athletes and nonathletes. Two subsamples (former athletes and nonathletes) were drawn from the alumnus of a medium-sized state university for the decade 1965-1975. Significant differences were evident between the former athletes and nonathletes continuing to demonstrate an interest and involvement in sport. No significant differences were found between the subsamples on attitudes toward work. Comparisons between the former athletes and nonathletes on satisfaction with aspects of life were similar, though more athletes were satisfied with their health and physical conditions than the nonathletes. The findings do not indicate that the disengagement from collegiate sport has been stressful for the former athletes. Perhaps collegiate athletic participation has its greatest carry-over consequence in the realm of adult leisure. Compared former athletes to nonathletes using alumni of a medium sized state university from 1965-1975 (n=450). Significant differences were found between leisure activity involvement, with former athletes being more active. No significant differences were found between the two groups in attitudes toward work, or health and fitness.
