ABSTRACT:
This article examines some of the centuries-old myths and legends of the aboriginal inhabitants of New Zealand, the Maoris, in order to determine the type of games and physical activities common amongst the ancestors of the native New Zealand people. These legends sketch the deeds and activities of the early Maori in New Zealand. Although most of this country's history is shrouded in pre-literate time and much of what is known has been garnered from chants, songs and unwritten tales, archeological researches do provide some substantiation for many of the Maori legends. It would seem evident from this current investigation that many of the ancient games and activities of the early Maori have largely disappeared from Maori culture and have become legends in themselves. Examines some of the myths and legends of the Maories in order to determine the type of games and physical activities common amongst the ancestors of the native New Zealand people.
