ABSTRACT:
Reviews definitions of self-confidence and the related concepts of self-efficacy, perceived competence or ability, sport confidence, and movement confidence. Briefly describes the major theoretical approaches to studying the relationship between self-confidence and sports performance: self-efficacy theory, competence motivation theory, and the models of sport confidence and movement confidence. Reviews general criticisms, provides research evidence from sport, and compares these models, which all view self-confidence as a critical mediator of motivation and behaviour, but differ with respect to the origins of self-confidence and how it is measured. Evaluates the status of the relationship of confidence to sport performance, and presents suggestions for future research.
