ABSTRACT:
This chapter reviewed research on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in sport. Various definitions and approaches to the study of intrinsic motivation are discussed. This is followed by an extensive review of the literature on instrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It is concluded that it is important for coaches, teachers and parents to stress to young athletes the need to improve skills, teamwork and sportsmanship over the win at all costs attitude. Intrinsic motivation is extremely important for promoting enjoyment and long term involvement in sport. Reviews three theoretical approaches to the study of intrinsic motivation: behavioural, cognitive, and motivational. Focuses on cognitve evaluation theory, which explains changes in intrinsic motivation. Presents an extensive review of the research pertinent to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Discusses other relevant sport research on such topics as coaching and fitness. Observes that the intrinsic motivation of athletes seems extremely important for promoting enjoyment, long-term involvement, and fine-tuned performance in sport. Concludes that a great deal of research is needed to help shape sport settings so that they become more conducive to the intrinsic motivation of participants.
