ABSTRACT:
The author reviews work done on spinal cord injuried (SCI) victims, and underlines strengths and weaknesses, as well as areas of needed research. It is recognized that the spinal cord injured have extremely limited exercise capability due to skeletal muscle dysfunction, loss of sympathetic control to the cardiovascular systems, and/or their need for constant medication. As well, the fitness level in the SCI is reduced. Glaser examines studies of the efficiency of various types of wheel-chairs versus other forms of locomotion, concluding there is a need for improved design to accomodate the SCI and other physically handicapped.
