ABSTRACT:
Reseach on physical conditioning in children having cardiorespiratory disease has been slow to develop because of the methodological and ethical difficulties in studying these groups. The author reviews work done on children with respiratory diseases (bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis) and cardiovascular diseases (congenital heart disease and juvenile hypertension). Trainability of children with cardiorespiratory disease, as well as the advantageous and detrimental effects of acute exercise on their health is discussed. The latter is of special interest. While exercise in most cases will have a positive effect, the deleterious effects, real and potential, need to be identified in order to design effective intervention programs.
