ABSTRACT:
Examines the extent to which participation in sports activities across the life span is marked by deletion (contraction), addition (expansion), or no change (continuity). Looks at age differences in involvement within these three frameworks. Determines whether sociodemographic factors are effective in differentiating between individuals who are contractors or expanders. Uses data from the Nationwide Recreation Survey, collected from a sample of 6,720 individuals living in the United States. Divides the life span into eight age periods - 18-21, 22-28, 29-36, 37-43, 44-50, 51-60, 61-75, and Identifies junctions at which significant differences in sports involvement occur, particularly in the area of expansion. Finds no differences in extent of participation using the sociodemographic variables of occupation, education, income, race, sex, marital status, and number of persons in the household under 12 years of age.
