ABSTRACT:
The present study was designed to assess selected psychometric properties of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), a multidimensional measure of subjects' experience with regard to experimental tasks. 116 competed in a basketball free-throw shooting game, following which they completed the IMI. The LISREL VI computer program was employed to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis to assess the tenability of a five factor hierarchical model representing four first-order factors or dimensions and a second-order general factor representing intrinsic motivation. Indices of model acceptability tentatively suggest that the sport data adequately fit the hypothesized five factor hierarchical model. Coefficient alphas for the four dimensions and the overall scale indicated adequate reliability. The results are discussed with regard to the importance of accurate assessment of psychological constructs and the use of linear structural equations in confirming the factor structures of measures. Notes the research which has been done in intrinsic motivation, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of this research, and of the instruments used. Examines selected psychometric properties of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) using undergraduate physical education students (n=80 males, 36 females) performing a modified version of a competitive basketball shooting game. Adjusts the 27-item IMI to 18 items covering four subscales: interest-enjoyment, perceived competence, effort-importance, and tension-pressure. Employs the LISREL VI computer program to verify the proposed hierarchical factor model. Finds that deleting two of the items on the adjusted 18-item IMI results in more powerful internal consistency, and that the goodness-of-fit index and coefficient delta indicate that the factor structure of the item version of the IMI appears tenable in the competitive sport environment examined. Concludes that the IMI measures both specific components of intrinsic motivation and overall levels of intrinsic motivation which are experienced while performing the task.
