ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study was to develop a psychometrically sound scale that could be used by administrators of intercollegiate athletics to assess and articulate the goal orientations of their constituents. The development of the Scale of Athletic Priorities and the assessment of its psychometric properties was carried out through the selection of 74 items to reflect 11 objectives, and administering the scale to a total of 939 students from two Canadian universities. After analysis, the revised version of the scale was administered to 90 administrators of intercollegiate athletic programs in Canada, and to a new sample of 141 students. Thus, the Scale of Athletic Priorities consists of 36 items to assess the importance attached by respondents to nine distinct operative goals of intercollegiate athletics. Examines the problem of the establishment and articulation of organizational goals in the management of organizations such as intercollegiate athletics. Distinguishes between official and operative goals, and discusses the recent development of a need to officially proclaim operative goals. Proposes and evaluates a psychometrically sound scale that could be used by administrators to assess the goal orientations of their constituents. Suggests that this scale would also facilitate organizational analysis and research.
