ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study was to provide additional information on how children respond physiologically during an extended period of moderate exercise. Eleven children between the ages of 8 and 11 years were each observed during the 45 minutes of continuous treadmill walking. Among six selected points of measurement, oxygen consumption was significantly higher in the first period (0.92 l/min.) than in the five subsequent periods which averaged 0.88 l/min. Changes in pulmonary ventilation, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance were found to be more nonsignificant. In conclusion, the authors suggest that children respond to prolonged exercise in much the same manner as do adults at an exercise intensity of approximately 50% V02 max.
