ABSTRACT:
Forty-eight students performed one of two positioning movements on a linear positioning apparatus. The first movement required the subject to move the handle at the linear positioning apparatus location on the apparatus while the second movement required the subject to move the handle a particular distance irrespective of location on the apparatus. The results indicate that a metathetic continuum best describes location movements while a prothetic continuum best describes distance movements. These results are discussed in terms of the underlying kinesthetic mechanisms and in terms of their implications for experimental procedures for learning and memory investigations using discrete positioning responses.
