ABSTRACT:
The focus of this research was to see if the amount of spontaneous game involvement was related to organized sports participation in later childhood. Only a very limited reinforcing effect was noticed where organized sport participation affected self-directed game play or vice versa. Investigates the relationship between organized sport participation and frequency of involvement in self-directed games through interviews with public school students (n=160). Results provide little support for a notion that frequency of game playing has declined and offers only marginal support for a reinforcement effect of organized sport participation on self-directed game play. However, results suggest that continuing interest in sport may be a function of a greater game playing orientation.
