ABSTRACT:
Statistical data was collected to determine trends in selecting coaches for female athletes between 1974 and 1979. The results indicate: an increase in the number of coaches for female athletes, at the assistant rather than at the head coach level; a substantial increase in male coaches; a significant decline in female head coaches; and a large increase in male head coaches. Recommendations are made by the authors. Investigated trends in selecting coaches for female athletes between 1974 and 1979. Data were collected from 335 collegiate female athletic directors utilizing a questionnaire. These demographic results revealed: a 37% increase in the number of coaches for female athletes, a greater increase at the assistant rather than head coach level, a substantial increase in male coaches in comparison to their female counterparts, a significant decline in female head coaches, and a large increase in the number of male head coaches. Current practices and affirmative action strategies were discussed.
