ABSTRACT:
Examines the problems which are influencing the growth and acceptance of sport sociology as an academic speciality within the profession of physical education and the discipline of sociology. Discusses the problems associated with identity and legitimation. Concludes that the area has yet to be preceived as a legitimate sub-field owing to factors associated with critical mass, academic status and ideological orientations.
