ABSTRACT:
The sources of error in body composition assessment by laboratory methods are discussed. The reliability of the density scores in hydrostatic weighing is examined via the influence of body weight and the measurements of underwater weighing and residual air volume. Methodological problems associated with the skinfold technique are studied. Body circumference measurements are also discussed and are found to provide valuable information. Special emphasis is given to statistical considerations in body composition assessment. While specifically appropriate for researchers, the article will prove to be of great benefit to the practitioners.
