ABSTRACT:
Compares the social and task cohesion of a baseball team before and after a spring trip. Members (n=37) of an NCAA Division III baseball team respond to the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) one week prior to the trip. Twenty-two players travel with the team for ten days, while 15 players do not travel. The travelling players win one game and lose seven. All players complete the GEQ again one week after the team returns. Finds that players who travelled together report greater social attraction to the team than those who did not travel, but rate the team's task and social integration lower than do players who did not travel. Suggests that players may report higher 'Individual Attractions to the Group:Social' because of the intense experience of living and travelling together, but lower 'Group Integration: Task' because they lost seven of eight games.
