ABSTRACT:
Reports the results of a post hoc exploratory model-fitting procedure conducted on the original data from recent research (Deeter, which evaluated a model of achievement behaviour in a physical activity setting. (This model hypothesized that expectancy-related variables and task variables would directly predict performance, with no interaction between variables.) Evaluates consistent relationships that were found among certain variables and were not included in the original model. Evaluation of the modification indices and residual covariances indicates that relationships may exist between competitiveness and win orientation and task-specific self-efficacy, and between goal orientation and general self-efficacy. Respecification of the model to include these paths reveals a significant improvement in the fit of the model, but results in only minimal gains in the explanatory power of the model in its entirety.
