ABSTRACT:
This paper reviews literature concerning outdoor recreation and older americans in three areas: leisure activity and life satisfaction; leisure patterns of older americans; and constraints to leisure participation of the elderly. Voids in the literature are noted and recommendations are made to the President's Commission on American Outdoors. Provides a comprehensive literature review and synthesis on the subject of the involvement of older Americans in outdoor recreation. Examines three major areas: 1) leisure activity and life satisfaction, leisure patterns of older Americans, and 3) constraints to leisure participation of the elderly. Finds that although great advances have been made toward understanding the leisure needs and patterns of elderly persons in recent decades, knowledge on this subject is far from complete. Notes voids in the knowledge base in two categories: 1) those related to research methodology, and 2) those concerned with specific issues and/or topical matters. Offers recommendations for further research.
