ABSTRACT:
As a form of leisure, recreational boating provides society with both non-monetary and monetary benefits. In many instances, however, little is known quantitatively about these benefits. The primary objective of this paper is to shed some light on the monetary benefits of recreational boating. Recreational boating has recently been shown to have a significant role within state economies. The impact of the recreational boating industry on the Texas State economy is a case in point. The recreational boating industry was found to be an interrelated and productive component of the Texas economy. In 1983, the Texas recreational boating industry provided 10,270 man-years of employment, had a total output value of over $610 million and paid out almost $184 million in income to Texas households. An application of a state level input-output model indicated that the direct plus indirect and induced economic impacts of the Texas recreational boating industry in 1983 exceeded $1.7 billion. Investigates the monetary benefits of recreational boating. Focuses on the size of the recreational boating industry in Texas, and its economic impact on the Texas economy. Recreational boating firms n=266) respond to a survey. Finds that the industry is an interrelated and productive component of the Texas economy. Reports the number of people employed in the industry and the total income paid out to Texas households.
