ABSTRACT:
This paper reviews recent research on the psychological and social effects of joblessness among groups of redundant adults and unemployed school-leavers. Leisure activities are suggested as possible meaningful alternatives to employment. The author concludes that if leisure is to compensate fully for the loss of a job the financial and social status of the unemployed must be ensured. Examines the impact of job deprivation on the meaning of work, the availability of meaningful alternatives to unemployment, long term unemployment and enforced leisure time on unemployed adults and school-leavers (N=95) in industrial areas of England. Suggests that the unemployed need special attention from recreationists in terms of their particular life experiences. Argues that part of a comprehensive re-education plan should be the provision of opportunities to the long-term unemployed through instructive recreational activity.
