ABSTRACT:
One hundred eighty-four married couples were interviewed to determine their preferences with regards to 33 physical activities. The results indicate that women in the study were considerably less involved in recreational sport than were their husbands. Men were attracted to sports with elements of competition, dominance, physical challenge, thrill and physical fitness. Women were attracted to sports with elements of aesthetics, relaxation, body conditioning, and companionship, and an aversion to the risk of physical injury. The authors conclude that sex differences are more strongly related to deep-rooted socialization effects than to current structural constraints.
