ABSTRACT:
Within exercise psychology, the employment of social cognitive theories has allowed researchers to identify influences and possible mechanisms that account for participation in exercise and physical activity. These approaches have also advanced the development of interventions to enhance and maintain exercise and physical activity. Despite this, the adherence problem is far from being solved. This paper proposes an alternative perspective known as ‘discursive psychology’ and explores its potential for further understanding the adherence problem. How this approach differs from leading approaches is highlighted. Discursive psychology’s potential contribution in terms of its focus on discourse and what is accomplished through people’s use of words is considered in greater detail. Additionally, how discursive psychology contributes to understanding exercise adherence by opening up new avenues of research and the development of associated methodologies is discussed. It is concluded this approach will complement and enhance existing approaches by focusing on how people are situated within discourses and how this affords and limits how they speak, feel, and behave with respect to exercise.
