ABSTRACT:
The shared leadership between volunteers and staff in amateur sport involves an ideological and behavioral commitment to the involvement of citizens in the leadership of non-profit organizations. An examination of how volunteers and paid staff are attending to various roles and responsibilities reflect two dominant themes in the sport management literature: leadership and culture. The shared leadership is at least partly shaped by the expertise of the volunteers and paid staff, and the attention and the influence exerted by these leaders to various board functions that are thought to be vital to effective board and organizational operations. In this study, executive directors, volunteer presidents and volunteer board members of provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) provided perceptual data on a number of leadership-related indicators including: (a) the importance of board selection criteria, (b) the expertise and utilization of the expertise of volunteers and staff, (c) actual and preferred levels of influence on nine board functions, and (d) the presence of a core group. The results indicate significant differences between the subgroups on the leadership dimensions, areas for board development, and support for the traditional culture of volunteer involvement in the governance of amateur sport.
