ABSTRACT:
The academic performance of student athletes at a Canadian university was examined over a two-year period. Comparisons were made across gender, with the general student population (i.e., non-athletes), by type of sport, and between academic faculties. Results indicated that female student athletes had significantly higher averages than the males; non-athletes had significantly higher averages than the student athletes overall and by gender; there were no significant differences in entrance averages of the student athletes and non-athletes by gender; and there were no significant differences according to CIAU versus non-CIAU sport, although there were some differences according to length of season. Finally, there were inconsistent findings between the student athletes and non-athletes by affiliated faculty, with the exception of the Faculty of Social Science and the School of Business Administration where the averages were higher for the non-athletes for the two-year period.
