ABSTRACT:
Summarizes the achievements to date of the Cuban revolution with respect to sport and physical education. Discusses the rational ideal of 'massivity', which resembles the European ideal of 'sport for all' but is more advanced in its appreciation of the important contribution of health education and fitness to the well being of the whole population. Looks at the importance of the school in laying the foundations of both lifelong health and fitness and success in high level sport. Describes the revolution in physical education that occurred two years after Castro's military victory. Explains the 'double pyramid' of massivity and high performance which comprises the current Cuban system of sport and physical education. Considers several overtly political dimensions to Cuban sport that are bound up with both domestic and foreign policy issues. Speculates how sport will develop in Cuba over the next three decades.
