ABSTRACT:
There has been a recent growth in the number of collaborative relationships forged between football clubs and other businesses. Some examples include the player exchange deal between Saint Etienne and Arsenal, and the strategic alliance between Leeds United and BSkyB. There are a number of reasons for this growth including pressure to achieve financial returns, inflation in the player transfer market and the growing influence of media groups. Clubs are therefore having to think strategically about their long-term positions, and about how to secure a competitive advantage over their rivals.^LThe main focus of this paper is an analysis of collaboration at the strategic network level. This will highlight the importance of strategic position to the clubs involved, and of establishing collaborative relations with other businesses as a means of enhancing it. Using this approach, the paper will highlight the benefits that can he derived from the co-ordination of strategy with other organisations.^LThere are a number of important considerations for clubs entering into collaborative arrangements. At a general level, trust and sharing will be key factors in the successful management of relationships. More specifically, during the pre- and the post-collaborative agreement phases, issues such as partner selection and boundary management will be significant. The paper will therefore explore such considerations as a basis for establishing an agenda for further research in football club collaboration.^L
